a final Showdown—Which is better?

our 1-ON-1 tutoring or their 3-on-1 group tutoring?

Let’s compare our method of ALWAYS 1-ON-1 tutoring (1 tutor with only 1 student) with programs that use 3-ON-1 group tutoring—1 tutor with 3 students.

Many 3-ON-1 programs have 3 or more students and 1 tutor at each table. If they have 8 tables, then there might be 24 students and 8 tutors—a total of 32 people—in a single room. These loud, open classroom-like settings, where tutors and students discuss many different topics, are distracting and not ideal for quick learning.

In contrast, all of our 1-ON-1 tutoring stations are isolated in rooms or in sound-reducing cubicles. Each tutoring table has exactly 2 chairs. It’s easier to focus on assignments and learn skills without being distracted by other tutors and students.

Setup for the Challenge:

  • The need—A student needs 3 hours (180 minutes) of direct instruction time with a tutor to master a specific skill.

  • The pricing—For this comparison, let’s assume that one 45-minute lesson of our 1-ON-1 costs $33. And, one 60-minute lesson of their 3-ON-1 tutoring costs $33.

  • The assumption—All three students at the 3-ON-1 tutoring table get equal time (only 20 minutes each) with the one tutor during the 60 minutes.

At first glance, it seems like the 60 minutes of 3-ON-1 tutoring for the same price is a better deal because it’s 15 extra minutes. ‍You’ll be surprised. The 3-ON-1 tutoring costs about $100 per hour! Keep reading to learn more.

Our 1-ON-1 tutoring,

1 student - 1 tutor

1-on-1

You only need 4 tutoring lessons to reach 3 full hours (180 minutes) of direct instruction time with the tutor. No need to wait your turn if you have questions—you get help immediately. Grades improve faster with fewer tutoring lessons.

Tutoring lesson 1 - 45 minutes

Tutoring lesson 2 - 45 minutes

Tutoring lesson 3 - 45 minutes

+Tutoring lesson 4 - 45 minutes

4 tutoring lessons = 180 minutes (3 hours).

Total cost: $132, or $44 for each hour of instruction from the tutor!

their 3-on-1 group tutoring,

3 students - 1 tutor

3-on-1

You share the 60-minute tutoring session with two other students—that’s 60 minutes divided by 3 to get 20 minutes of time. The other 40 minutes belong to other students. You pay for 60 minutes but get only 20 minutes—about 33% of the time purchased. Plus, you must WAIT your turn if you need help. What’s worse is that you pay for 9 hours but only get 3 hours of actual direct interaction with the tutor.

Tutoring lesson 6 - 20 minutes

Tutoring lesson 7 - 20 minutes

Tutoring lesson 8 - 20 minutes

+Tutoring lesson 9 - 20 minutes

9 hours of tutoring lessons sitting in groups = 180 minutes (3 hours) of the tutor’s time. Pay for 9 hours and get 3 hours of direct instruction with the tutor—seems like a bad deal any way you look at it.

Total cost: $297 (nearly $300) or about $100 for each hour of direct instruction from the tutor!

The Final results

3-on-1 group Tutoring

  • You pay $165 more (or 125% increase) for 3-ON-1 group tutoring to get the same 3 hours of direct instruction time with the tutor.

  • You’re paying about $100 for each 60 minutes of direct interaction with the tutor.

  • It takes 200% more time at the facility to get a full 3 hours of tutoring (9 hours of 3-ON-1 equals 3 hours of time with the tutor.)

  • You need 9 visits (compared to 4 visits for 1-ON-1) to the 3-ON-1 group tutoring facility to master the 3-hour skill.

  • It costs $33 for 60 minutes of 3-ON-1 tutoring, but you get only 20 minutes—$11 worth of service. That’s like throwing away $22 each hour. Wow!

full-lesson 1-on-1 tutoring

  • Students excel faster because the tutor focuses all attention on only one student. Less time is needed to master skills. No waiting for your turn for help.

  • The student’s mistakes are corrected immediately because the tutor only has one student.

  • Save money because you don’t need as many tutoring visits to master skills.

  • No large open classroom settings —Our ALWAYS 1-ON-1 tutoring is done in sound-reducing cubicles or in rooms (not shared) to promote concentration and minimize distractions.

  • Knowledgable tutors— We have skilled, experienced tutors, most having years of tutoring and/or actual classroom teaching experience. Many of our tutors are licensed, certified teachers or hold advanced master, doctorate, and other advanced degrees.

the clear winner

We can agree that full-lesson 1-ON-1 is the better choice—a better value with each dollar spent, a better option for the learner.

Students, especially those with ADHD, ADD, or other attention difficulties, benefit from our noise-reducing cubicles and individual rooms with our tutors. Look at a few of our tutoring stations below. Note: Only 1 chair for the tutor and 1 chair for the student.
